how to monthly plan for productivity & success (+ journaling prompts!) | my monthly planning routine.

Back at the start of my blogging journey, I was REALLY into setting monthly goals. Did I achieve them? Not necessarily. Were they helpful in me getting my life on track? Most definitely! While I was in college, monthly goals fell by the wayside (and let’s be real, COVID didn’t help at all), but now that I’m out of college, I’ve been slowly planning how I used to, and it’s been so good for me!

Today, I’ll be walking through my monthly planning routines. I really like having a monthly plan, because it gives some structure about the overall trajectory of my month. It’s not as broad as a yearly goal, and not as confining as a weekly or daily goal. Knowing approximately where I want to end the month at works really well with my brain and my lifestyle, and I’ve really been enjoying setting my monthly goals again!

My monthly routine is a process that takes me a couple hours when I am taking my time. I don’t do each of these steps in depth every month, so it definitely doesn’t take that much time every month, but I do really like taking a weekend afternoon to just chill and plan out my upcoming month!

Check New Year’s Goals

One thing about me is that I WILL set New Year’s Resolutions. Setting new yearly goals at the start of a new year is truly one of my favorite times of the year, and I make it A Whole Deal.

The first thing I will do when I’m setting new monthly goals is to look back at the goals I set for the year overall, and pick out which goals I want to focus on for the month. Is there a quantitative number that I can try to hit (such as $ to make or # of instagram followers), or is there a goal I can try to take a step towards (such as updating my resume)? I break these goals down into a piece that is attainable in a month, and use that to guide my monthly goals.

Set Goals For the Month

Oftentimes, when I take goals from the yearly view, it is still broad and undefined, so I break it down. I also like breaking large scale goals down into daily tasks to achieve. For example, if one of my goals is to “sort through my email,” this is the step where I set my monthly goal to be “spend 30 minutes each day sorting emails.” If my goal is to “gain 100 instagram followers,” my goal will be “comment on 20 instagram posts a day and post 3 times a week”.

Assigning a quantifiable number to an otherwise vague goal makes it much easier to strive towards. I then make a list of all the habits/tasks I want to get done in a day, and write it down. I usually strive towards setting about 10-15 goals, ranging from small goals like “make bed everyday” to much larger ones like “reach out to 25 brands”.

Set Up Monthly Bullet Journal Spread and Notion Page

Once I have my monthly goals in hand, I set up my planners. Right now, I use a bullet journal and Notion to plan, so I make my monthly pages for them. Pretty straightforward, but very handy.

Outline Upcoming Dates in the Month and Split Into Weeks

Next, I look at the upcoming month and pick out any due dates, important dates, and events that I have planned, and put them into my calendar. If there are tasks that need to be done on certain weeks, I write them into my calendar. I basically just take the broader monthly goals and split it up into weeks, so that I’m not scrambling at the end of the month to accomplish all of them.

Wrap Up Previous Month

I also take some time to go through my planners from the previous month and check off any tasks that I didn’t check off, as well as migrate any tasks that I didn’t end up completing into the new monthly tasks. I also look through my bullet journal brain dump from the previous month and transfer that information as necessary. Overall, I just tie up any loose ends!

Monthly Journal Entry

Last, I do my internal processing. I usually use the prompts from this pinterest post, but there are a lot of Pinterest posts (and posts on other social media platforms) with monthly recap prompts. Some of my favorites are:

  • What was the highlight of your past month? What was the worst part of your last month?
  • How are you feeling about this upcoming month?
  • What are you looking forwards to this month?
  • In an ideal world, what will your life look like at the end of this month?

I like doing this step at the end because I’ll have gotten an idea of what I’m doing in the upcoming month and can properly parse the information.

that’s my monthly planning routine! do you set monthly goals? what steps do you take that are like mine, and what do you do different? I would love to know!

Blogmas Day 27: January 2018 Goals

HI FRENS! Today we’re going to talk about my goals for January of 2018! You may have seen in my 2018 Resolutions blogpost about how I’m going to be doing monthly goals now, because my life is going to be CRAZY this year!

Blogmas 2017(7)

So. Here are my January 2018 goals!

  1. Go to bed before 12 am. Especially the latter part of this month, I’ve been super super bad about going to bed on time (like, 3am bad). I know 12 am is still late, but I have several college applications due this month at midnight so we’ll see how that even goes XD
  2. Stay well-hydrated. Last year, I made a resolution to drink more water, which worked decently, until the very end of the year. My plan for January is to rehydrate my self, then to keep myself well hydrated, since I perform so much better that way.
  3. 3 blog comments every day. Like last year, I’m currently planning on doing 3 blog comments every day. If I do this monthly, I can cut back on the months I’m going to be busier, and overall it’s going to work better, I think.
  4. Knit some every day. I have a bunch of knitting projects I’ve been meaning to get done for FOREVER, but have never gotten around to doing. If I knit a little every day, then I’ll be that much nearer to finishing!
  5. Read 15 books. January is usually a decently low-key month for me in terms of school, so I’m hoping to spend some of that extra time reading!
  6. Review verses. In January, I’m going to be memorizing Philippians 1: 1-18 with my Bright Lights group, and I’ll have to keep up with that every day!
  7. Finish my entire to-do list. This entails keeping up with school work (which I’ve been really bad about) and otherwise finishing my to-do list for the day, to keep myself from overcommitting to projects and tasks that I can’t complete.
  8. Get my senior pictures done! It’s senior year, and one of my best friends is taking my senior photos, and my other best friend is doing my makeup! I hope we can get that done this month, but definitely next month otherwise!
  9. Finish applying to colleges! This is something that I have to do, since nearly every college deadline is between now and January 15th. (Bless you UMich for your February 1st deadline) I hope I can get all my application essays done in January!

And that’s it! These are my goals for next month!

What are your goals for January? Do you usually set yearly goals, or monthly goals?

InCoWriMo 2017 || yet something else stupid that I’m doing

Having been in the blogging world, I’ve been hearing about InCoWriMo for some time now, but hadn’t really looked into it, until Grace Anne from Totally Graced wrote a blogpost about snail mail, and linked to InCoWriMo (because obviously I’m too lazy to have googled it).

And, because I’m completely sane and time-management savvy and all that, I’m going to try to do it!

InCoWriMo.jpg

In case you haven’t known yet, InCoWriMo stands for International Correspondence Writing Month. It’s basically a challenge for people who hand-write a letter to someone every day in February, for a total of 28 letters.

So, yup, I’m trying to do this. Of course, it’s already February 3rd, and I haven’t done a single letter, but shhhh, no one needs to know.

So yeah…I guess, motivation?

But anyways, if I actually follow through on this thing, I’ll try to take some pictures of my letters and put them all in a blogpost at the end of the month.

Also if this post seems really incoherent and stuff, it’s because I’m currently NOT PROCRASTINATING on cramming for Anatomy.

Lots, and lots, and lots of hormones. (I’m studying hormones; I’m not hormonal) XD

The first SciOly competition is tomorrow, which explains things.

But anyways, are you doing InCoWriMo? How’s your progress coming? By goodness this is the worst blogpost that I’ve probably ever written oops.

New Year’s Resolutions updates (February)

Procrastination…..Here are the New Year’s Resolution Updates for February.

  • To do devotionals/bible reading every day-  Same as last month….got in Bible reading/devotionals every day. At the rate I’m doing my NY’sR….this is the only one that’s working so far….
  • Get closer to God- Probably….though not quite as much as last month, because of all these snow days- church was cancelled a few times and postponed once. (On a side note, perhaps my procrastination was so that I could find this picture and use it…) I’ll be taking this advice next  this month.
  • Drink more water-  This…let’s say not.
  • Really become ambidextrous- I have practiced writing with my other hand this month….but…
  • Not waste so much time- Probably not. Managed about 5 days mostly off the internet, and one day entirely off the internet, but….not.
  • Knit at least 10 skeins of yarn- Well….everything that I started last month got unraveled….However, I started a pirouette hat and a ear warmer. The patterns can be found here and here.
  • Get my weight to 100士5 pounds-  No…just no.
  • Eat no more than 1 piece of candy per day- Yes…one of the other ones that has been working so far. I’m paring this back to one piece per week..YEY!! 😀
  • Get up earlier/Go to bed earlier This totally hasn’t happened this month. Both of those habits are now deep, dark, ugly red on HabitRPG.
  • To get Beastmaster accomplishment and to collect 100 mounts on HabitRPG- I know, why is this even a NY’sR? Because. Well anyways, now I have a total of 25 mounts.
  • To become entirely vegetarian- My resolve is weakening….This month, I want to get someone to hold me accountable. But anyways…didn’t quite improve very much this month.
  • Grow my hair to my waist- No haircut…but probably no growth either.

On a sidenote, there’s been a lot of snow here….and I’ve been reading the Anne of Green Gables series. Which reminds me, I need to work on my bucket list….On a sidenote on a sidenote, I just chipped my front tooth on my flute…

New Year’s Resolutions updates (January)

I feel like a way to keep my New Year’s resolutions would be to add updates on it every month. Here’s the New Year’s Resolutions for January.

  • To do devotionals/bible reading every day-  This has really worked out so far- I’ve done devotionals/Bible reading every day except for one, which I got up early to do the next day.
  • Get closer to God- I personally feel like there is no good way to determine this, but I feel like yes, this has happened, probably because I have done Bible reading/devotionals every day. (Also, so far I haven’t had to use the word devotionals minus the letters tional, just because I find that word cheesy.)
  • Drink more water-  This…erm…well…let’s just say this has happened, but not particularly. I have hit a few days with 50+ ounces of water, though!
  • Really become ambidextrous- This one…well…didn’t happen.
  • Not waste so much time- Maybe, maybe not. I did manage to stay off the computer and the internet for most of 5 days, though!
  • Knit at least 10 skeins of yarn- Knitting hasn’t quite happened yet. I’ve learned to crochet over the past month, and have started a good number of projects, some of which include a sweater (which found its way onto the needles then got unraveled), a sock (which might turn into a pair of socks in the future but only amounts to 8 rows at the present).
  • Get my weight to 100士5 pounds-  Flat out not happened.
  • Eat no more than 1 piece of candy per day- Yes, has happened. I might pare this back to 1 piece per week, seeing my results so far.
  • Get up earlier/Go to bed earlier Get up earlier (before 7:30am), has happened twice. Go to bed earlier (before 10:30pm), has happened once. Whether or not that counts as significant. (On a sidenote, both of those habits are not deep, dark, ugly red on HabitRPG).
  • To get Beastmaster accomplishment and to collect 100 mounts on HabitRPG- I got my Beastmaster on January 5th…yey! I’ve also collected 8 mounts. I’d also like to add the update that it is only possible to collect 90 (non-quest) mounts, not 100.
  • To become entirely vegetarian- Took a week of in the middle of January to become “non-vegetarian”, then resumed my “cut out beef/pork” thing and added chicken.
  • Grow my hair to my waist- I’ve managed to avoid a haircut (that my mom wanted to give me). Other than that, I feel like my hair isn’t growing much anymore. :/
